Neglected Blog

Writer's block. Real life. Weather. Busyness. All reasons why it has been quiet for the last couple of months. I'm still trying to figure out which direction I want to take this blog. Winter has always been an introspective time of year for me. I have some new things I will be trying in the coming year and I want this spot to bbe the place I share them. Happy Holidays!

Menu Plan Monday-10/1/12

Since the end of January, I've been successful at weekly menu planning. It hasn't come easily.

However, the benefits have been awesome.

  • Money saved by not dining out.
  • Lots of time in the kitchen which is nice because I like to cook.
  • Knowing what's for dinner ahead of time instead of freaking out at the last minute.
  • Eating healthier which has resulted in weight loss, better sleep and clearer skin.

I spent part of 2011 attempting a paleo/primal way of eating but not giving up soda, occasional visits to fast food restaurants and a treat of a candy bar. The results: MEH. However, this spring, I had to make some serious dietary changes for health reasons. No ifs, ands or buts. No pasta, bread, flour, coffee, cut back on dairy and limit all forms of sugar. NO CHOCOLATE. This left me asking, what do I eat now? Sugar is in everything! Thankfully, the dietary changes I needed to make (handed to me by my doc) went along with what I'd been trying to attempt for a year. I just had to bite the bullet and get down to work. And I did. I'm feeling much better. I miss pasta and coffee sometimes.

Now, onto Menu Plan Monday....(although I do mine on Sundays)

Sunday
Stuffed Cabbage
Roasted Corn with Queso Cilantro & Chile

Monday

Stay tuned. Activity will be brisk around these parts soon.

Sunday Goal Update: Week 3

Last week's goals:

1. Clean out master bedroom closet & top of dresser. I cleared a few things off the top of my dresser. The closet remains untouched.

2. Sketch out new daily home/work schedule.

3. Workout 4 times. The week before last I injured my right heel while exercising. Thinking it was better on Thursday, I worked out again. Not good. It turns out I pulled a tendon in my foot. I'm blaming the grooved hardwood floors and overdoing the workout. My husband set up another spot for me in the house with carpet to my workout videos.

4. Get business tax stuff in order. Since I had to be off of my foot due to #3, I had a lot of time at my desk to get paper work in order and get a spreadsheet completed.

5. Spend 15 minutes decluttering each day in the basement. I stayed off of my feet as much as possible.

I'm finally ready to kick 2012 into gear! I'm still doing well on not drinking soda and I find myself not craving it.

Goals for the upcoming week.

1. Clean out master bedroom closet, top of dresser and nightstand and get down to the basement. Flylady is hosting a Super Fling Boogie for the next few weeks. I'm curious to see how much I can get rid of. I've also put time for decluttering in my new schedule.

2. Workout 2-3 times depending on foot. I'll be easing back into working out by using a stationery bike and working on upper body exercises.

3. Create & complete spreadsheets for main income categories.

4. Give new daily schedule a test run. I've created daily schedules in the past that have either been to rigid or lax. This one incorporates a bit of everything in blocks of time including breaks and chores.

5. Take photos and list basket of inventory that is getting in the way of my shipping area. I'm tired of moving this around to different spots in my office.

Sunday Goal Update: Week 2

With my family being on vacation for a couple of weeks for the holidays, it has thrown my routine off. It's been hard getting of relaxation mode and getting back into my normal groove. I finally found my stride mid-week.

Here's how it went with my goals.

1. Take down the Christmas tree & reorganize the decorations, ornaments, etc. I removed all of the ornaments, lights and few decorations and took them down to the basement. I planned on reorganizing all of the decorations and gift wrapping supplies. However, I felt the other things that need to be cleaned up and organized in the basement staring me down, so I left as quickly as I could.
The tree got pushed outside so the Boy Scouts could pick it up over the weekend. Unfortunately, neither my husband nor I had $5 cash to put in the donation envelope to attach to the tree. So it's out on the front porch scaring us out of our wits as it looks like someone standing out there whenever we pass by. My husband has said he'll take care of it.

2. Drink tea and water in place of soda for the week. I need to kick the soda habit as I have many reasons to stop drinking it on a regular basis but my body doesn't think so. I'm on day 2 and it has been rough. I've made it a full week without soda with caffeine and HFCS. I had a few days with some bad headaches and a couple of cravings with some meals where I usually have a soda. I had a soda at the end of the week with pure cane sugar and no caffeine. I found it to be very sweet and it was hard to finish. For now, I'll continue to enjoy tea and water.

3. Clean out master bedroom closet.

4. Sketch out a new daily home/work schedule.

5. Workout at least 3 times this week. Yes! This one was the goal I wanted to complete the most. I fell off the exercise bandwagon in August/September, started up again mid-December and stopped for the holiday break. It's very important for me to keep active. Last year, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. It's been very frustrating as I don't lose weight very quickly (2-3 times slower than the average person) and that discourages me from concentrating on eating right and exercising However, there is no excuse for me to not be as healthy as I can be. The benefits I've had this week are sleeping better at night, having more energy throughout the day and feeling much more positive.

My goals for this next week are:

1. Clean out master bedroom closet & top of dresser.

2. Sketch out new daily home/work schedule.

3. Workout 4 times.

4. Get business tax stuff in order. I procrastinated on this really badly.

5. Spend 15 minutes decluttering each day in the basement. (I'd rather stick a fork in my eye but it needs to be done.)

See ya next week!

2012: Goals & Such

A busy summer turned into a busy fall which turned into a crazy busy winter and here it is the beginning of a new year. I've missed blogging and hope to post on a more regular basis.

I've been inspired to take part in Van's Sunday Goal Link Share at Thriftcore. I love this idea of staying on track with many goals I have this year.

Each Sunday, I'll post five of my goals for the upcoming week, with the exception of this week.

My goals for this week:

1. Take down the Christmas tree & reorganize the decorations, ornaments, etc.

2. Drink tea and water in place of soda for the week. I need to kick the soda habit as I have many reasons to stop drinking it on a regular basis but my body doesn't think so. I'm on day 2 and it has been rough.

3. Clean out master bedroom closet.

4. Sketch out a new daily home/work schedule.

5. Workout at least 3 times this week.

I hope I make it! :)

Thrift Share Monday-Girls' Weekend Edition

This month flew by! I still have lots of thrifted finds to share. :)

The first weekend of the month I found myself heading to the Columbia Gorge area for a girls' only weekend with my friends, filled with river-rafting and wine-tasting. I'm not much of a wine drinker but I found two wines that I really liked. Unfortunately, I didn't bring any home with me but I can buy it off of the winery's website. :) I didn't think there would be any thrifting on this trip (being the die-hard thrifter I am, I looked up thrift stores in the area we were lodging and didn't see any nearby) but one of my friends spotted an antique store when we were heading to a winery. Here are some of the things that made me drool. I would have loved to bring them home but they wouldn't fit in my suitcase.

Typewriters!

Cameras!

Radios!

Some flour sifters and other fun kitchen gadgets.

I adored this radio but I was about out of cash on my road trip budget.

I would have loved these lamps in my room growing up.

Another cool radio.

I could picture this on the back porch off of my house. It was $1500. And my friends probably wouldn't want to be squished in the back of the van on the way home.

I found some fun kitchen towels and some other linens.

Fun round tablecloth for the summertime.

This one needs some TLC. I'm hoping a good soak will have it as good as new.

Retro hankie.
And there was some other vintage goodness through this trip too.

Great way to reuse a rusted car frame, if you have one hanging around your premises. :)

This reminded me of my vintage bike at home.

Shabby jeep used by the winery to drive through orchards.

Totally 60s picture at the Bonneville Dam. I think the wood paneling gives it some added flair.
